From Jail to Jubilee: Rev. Jackson joins Fr. Michael Pfleger at St. Sabina to announce prayer vigil

Clergymen to lead prayer on June 29 after arrests at Riverdale gun shop
CHICAGO (June 24, 2007) – After his arrest yesterday at a gun shop in south suburban Riverdale, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, today joined Fr. Michael Pfleger at St. Sabina Church, 1210 W. 78th St., Chicago, to announce that the fight against gun violence is not over.

Instead, the clergymen said they will host a prayer vigil at noon Friday, June 29, at Chuck’s Gun Shop, 14310 S. Indiana Ave., Riverdale, opposing easy access to guns just beyond the city limits of Chicago where gun sales are illegal.

“This Fourth of July, the [Chicago] police will be between here and Indiana arresting anyone who brings fireworks into the city because they are illegal here,” Rev. Jackson said. “Now why can’t they do that same type of surveillance on people who are buying guns in these neighboring suburbs and bringing them back into the city?”

Rev. Jackson and Fr. Pfleger, who have led marches and rallies against gun shops for the past three weeks, also are seeking transparency in the flow of guns, a limit to the number of guns an individual may purchase in a month, and a renewed ban on the use of semi-automatic weapons. Rev. Jackson called on presidential candidates to include this issue in presidential debates.

Fr. Pfleger said he has been receiving death threats since he and Rev. Jackson began their anti-gun protests. Yesterday John Riggio, who owns Chuck’s, pushed Rev. Jackson in front of the store, then watched as Riverdale police arrested Rev. Jackson. CLTV news cameras captured the incident.

“No jail cell can break our spirits,” Rev. Jackson told the St. Sabina congregation. “We have never lost a battle we fought; we have never won a battle we didn’t fight. So we must fight now to plan our children’s futures, not their funerals.”
